In an ever-changing world, full of disrespect and distrust, Hedley Clark stood tall amongst others, a prime example of what a man was meant to be.
I had the privilege of spending 5 years working alongside Hedley at Kearl. Hedley, and his partner, Freeman Morris, were the shuttle drivers for K2 Mining. They drove between the site, camp, town and airport all day long. In this role, Hedley contributed far more to the project at Kearl than one might ever imagine. With up to 1500 employees on our job, Hedley was at the front line of hearing employee praises and criticisms, and he never failed to bring his concerns to management. I was always very grateful for his thoughtful insight and the way he paid strict attention to what was being said.
Hedley was always gentleman. He helped female employees with bags, and greeted everyone warmly, with a welcoming smile.
As a manager on the Kearl Oil Sands Earthworks Project, I often drove my own vehicle to the airport. Yet, whenever I had an opportunity to ride with Hedley (or Freeman), I enjoyed it. One time, I had received a speeding ticket driving myself to the airport on my previous outbound trip, and I was in the van with Hedley, trying to pay the ticket on my BlackBerry, on our way to the airport. The website would not accept my payment! Hedley told me he could stop and make the payment for me. The ticket was only $69 and change, I gave him $100 bill. When I returned back to site from my turnaround, there was exact change and a receipt on my desk. I would have been fine if he had kept the change, but Hedley was a man of character and integrity. What’s even more telling is that my office was locked, and he had to get someone else (who clearly trusted him) to let him in.
I was saddened to hear of his passing; too soon for such a stalwart, good human being. I am a better man for having known him, and I am certain there are many others who feel the same way.

I had the pleasure of working with Hedley in Fort McMurray with K2 Mining. He was always a warm welcome when we all landed in the middle of winter. One memory in particular stands out- we were running late for a flight home due to weather and traffic. Hedley was so friendly, he made connections with the gals at the Air Canada counter. Because of these friendships, he was able to call them and have them hold the flight until we were able to get there. He always made sure everyone was taken care of. He will be greatly missed, my condolences to the family.

Joanne and family of Hedley. My sincere sympathy on Hedley's sudden passing.
I met Hedley in the mid 1970's in Port Aux Basques at CFGN radio. We worked side by side there until I
moved away, first to Happy Valley/Goose Bay and then on to Gander. Hedley was a dedicated worker and of course his passion was sports. I remember playing against him on basketball and softball teams. He was a strong competitor, while being fair and just. I crossed paths with Hedley every now and then, usually at the mall in Port Aux Basques or at a local music festival. We always had a friendly chat. My condolences to the family.

Hedley was a true blue guy that you could talk to about anything. I met Hedley at work in Fort McMurray. He had a wealth of knowledge and his care and compassion toward people was truly an admirable quality. His interests could keep him talking about any topic with ease.
Hedley may you rest in peace till we meet again one day. The world needs more people like you.

Hello Joanne and family. You don't know me but I'm from Whitbourne and knew Hedley back in the late 60's, early 70's when I visited my aunt, Phylis Walters, on Nelson Avenue, "the hill" as it was referred too. Too many of my friends from back then are gone way too soon, including Wilfred Ingram who lived with me during the last six years of his life. Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your husband and father. May he rest in peace. Judy Gosse.

To my dearest sister Joanne, niece Terri (Pete), nephew Mitchell (Robin) and our entire families. It is with the utmost regret that we have to post on line and we are not able to be there to share in your grief and give you the security of our love. Our hearts are broken and burning with sadness as there can be no other possible way to have a loved one ripped from our physical presents without warning and or contact. Hedley was a constant star and rock in our family. His unending devotion, commitment and sense of willingness throughout the years had taken tremendous strain of off our dear mother in her quest of caring for dad; whom Hedley adored and cherished so so much. Again, that was Hedley, he was the smile, the helping hand, the one to poke you when you got back in a vehicle being pulled from a snow ditch because you not only put the vehicle there, but was the smallest one to lighten the load for recovery. Then he would somehow find and manage to share his bake-apples with Susan and not to mention his love of cheesecake with bake-apples. When I would see Bob Cole on the NHL broadcasting, it reminded me as well of Hedley's play by play commentating of the Mariners games for which he loved plus being there trainer. Unequivocally, his love of music was as important and enjoyable. The music store, to DJ'g, and plugging a USB stick in the car for added tunes on extended drives of taking the Devereaux boys back and forth to the airport from time to time. Like most parents, Hedley adored his children and spoke of Mitchell and Terri on different occasions to highlight what they were doing or about to engage in. Terri and Mitchell, your dearest dad loved you more than any words can convey. When Mitchell was small, he always thought he would end up my height. Mitchell, you got lucky, thank god. Terri, knowing you were moving to Halifax was a big bonus because it was the one place your dad was happy to visit for a holiday or when en-route to Florida. A place where both him and Joanne and Susan and I met sometimes where Hedley would go shopping with the Ladies and Sam an I would go golfing. Thank you Hedley, Susan always remembers that when I go shopping with her. For my dearest and warmest sister Joanne, Hedley had mentioned to me on occasions of how much we were all devoted to our families; however, the same devotion, love and respect was unquestionably there when it came to his love for you. (we love you) Hedley, thank you for the love, time and energy you gave to make Joanne's, Terri's Mitchell's, Mom, Dads, our family, and your family (whom we all enjoyed) richer in all aspects of life. As each of you enter into this day and the remaining days this week and moving forward, please know that our prayers and condolences are being sent to each and every family member plus the community of Port Aux Basques and area which whom are also feeling sadness and sorrow. All our love and condolences and prayers, brother Brian and sister-in-law Susan, children, Katelyn, Maiah, and step children, Guylaine, Mario, Stephanie and Jean-Sebastain.

I am saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Hedley.
I had the honour of working with Hedley back around the mid 70’s at CFGN radio. There was no way of not getting to know Hedley back then because he immediately was drawn to broadcasting. In particular Sports. Once he started his career in broadcasting there was no taking away his passion for it. I believe Hedley was the 1st to do Live hockey broadcasts from the old hockey arena ( thanks blessings from then station manager George Critchel). Being a fellow broadcaster I knew what this meant. Even though I stayed the course and still work in broadcasting I often think of those early days in Port Aux Basques. Hedley and I did connect in person a few times over the years when I visited family in Port Aux Basques. The topic was, you guessed it, broadcasting. Hedley might have worn a few hats over the years and climbed the corporate ladder of success, but deep in his heart he remained a sports broadcaster.
If there are careers in heaven I know what Hedley is...
My deepest condolences go to his wife Joanne and family.

Hedley was one of my favorite people from my hometown. He had no reason to be kind to me other than the fact it was in his nature. When I was in grade 10, my sister was in the hospital. Still a stranger to me, he put his arm around my shoulders and made sure I was ok. He was also the first person to introduce me to John Prine. But no matter where I encountered him, Hedley always met me with a smile and a handshake. The world lost a good one and it is not as friendly as it was yesterday. Rest peacefully old friend.
